On the 10th May 2021, the Mosman community will welcome the next era in the ownership of our beloved butcher shop, Penny’s.
After taking the reins from the Penny family in July 2018, it’s been a privilege to step up and take on the challenge. We’ve had an incredible journey and have now decided it is time for us to pass on this great legacy.
Having two busy butcher shops has certainly been a lot of fun but also a lot of hard work. While you may not have seen us often working in the shop, we are constantly in action behind the scenes. We are a couple in our thirties, with two girls under five and the decision to simplify things has been very hard but is something we had to do for our family. In a time when many small businesses have struggled to stay afloat, we feel very fortunate to have been able to keep our doors open and all our staff employed. For us though, there simply aren’t enough hours in a week to put 110% into two separate businesses as well as a family.
We are looking forward to having the time to concentrate solely on our other shop, Millin’s Free Range Butcher, just over the Spit Bridge in Balgowlah Heights, which we started in 2011.
The last three years have been exciting and a pleasure, and have seen us move the shop in a more modern direction; introducing some new lines, ready-made meal solutions and installing a brand new refrigerated meat cabinet. Last year we invested heavily in some renovations of the shop, freshening it up and replacing old equipment, while keeping the same familiar layout within the store.
When we took on the challenge of running Penny’s, we relied heavily on the experience of the long-standing team and were careful to keep Penny’s familiar and consistent for both the staff and our loyal customers and supportive community. It was always our plan to run with the tried and tested Penny’s formula and to take baby steps with moving the traditional business into a more modern future. We are so immensely proud of the team that we have, everything they’ve accomplished with us and the success we’ve had together. What an achievement to win the North Shore Local Business Award for best Butcher in both 2019 and 2020!
The proud new owner of Penny’s, Denis MacDonald, is excited to keep moving things along towards the future and to bring in a new era, revamping product lines and bringing a fresh perspective to the shop. There will still be plenty of familiar faces across the counter and the same expert advice, superior quality meats and superb service. We are confident that you’ll love the energy and enthusiasm Denis brings and will be excited for the new offerings he has in store.
Denis has a distinguished career in butchery, hailing from Ireland and working in a number of Sydney’s most awarded butcher shops over the past 15 years. With his wife and business partner, he also owns TJ’s Quality Meats in Balmain and The Dublin Butcher in Forestville. He will be personally managing Penny’s, working in the shop day to day.
We wish Denis every success at the helm of the Penny’s ship and encourage the entire Mosman community to give him a very warm welcome. Running a small business these days is no mean feat, especially in the independent local butchery industry, and we hope that Mosman will continue to support Penny’s in Denis’ capable hands.
As we say goodbye to this rewarding chapter in our lives, we want to thank our incredible staff for their hard work and dedication and everyone for all your support and understanding. We feel Penny’s Quality Butchers and Mosman are ready for the exciting new era ahead and we wish you all great success.
